After running 3:59.55 at the Sydney Marathon, I crossed the line at the Gold Coast Marathon in 3:43.09 — comfortably under my goal of 3:50 and achieving a Boston Qualifier for the 60–64 age group using the run/walk method. In this video I compare both marathon campaigns side by side to uncover exactly what changed. From training volume and long runs to run/walk ratios, fuelling, pacing and race-day execution, I'll share the lessons I learned and the small adjustments that combined to produce a huge improvement. If you're training for your first marathon, chasing a personal best, or wondering whether the run/walk method can make you faster, I hope this comparison gives you some ideas you can apply to your own training. In this video you'll see: 🏃 Sydney Marathon vs Gold Coast Marathon comparison 📊 Training block statistics and key differences ⏱️ Why I changed my run/walk ratio 🍌 The fuelling strategy that worked better ❤️ Heart rate, pacing and race-day analysis 🎯 The biggest lessons from improving by 16 minutes If you enjoy the video, please consider giving it a 👍, subscribing to the channel, and sharing it with another runner chasing their next marathon goal. 3:50 or bust? | Gold Coast Marathon 2026 RACE DAY | Ep.16
#MarathonTraining #GoldCoastMarathon #RunWalkRun #RunningOver60 #MastersRunning #MarathonTaper #RoadToGoldCoast #runningmotivation #runwalkmarathon 0:00 Intro 0:26 Marathon Start 4:01 5km A rookie error 7.02 10km All good 8:53 15km First turnaround 10.12 20km The road opens up 10.58 Halfway, under goal pace 13:25 25km Still running smooth 14:14 30km I might have a problem 15:53 35km Do I keep the run/walk 18:08 40km I'm fading 18.28 Is it going to happen? IN THIS VIDEO After 16 weeks of training, race day has finally arrived. This is what every early morning, every long run, every recovery session, every setback and every kilometre has been building towards. My goal was simple: run a sub-3:50 marathon at the Gold Coast Marathon using the run/walk method and, at almost 60 years old, achieve a Boston Marathon qualifying time. Race week had gone perfectly. The taper was complete, the legs felt fresh, the race plan was set and confidence was high after a strong build-up. But marathons have a way of testing you when you least expect it. Around the 30km mark, my left calf began threatening to cramp. Every run interval became a gamble, and for the first time all day I started questioning whether the run/walk strategy would get me to the finish line. Would I stick to the plan? Would the calf hold together? Or would 16 weeks of preparation unravel in the final 12 kilometres? Join me as I take you through the entire race day experience—from the nervous moments before the start, the incredible atmosphere along the Gold Coast course, and the mental battle that every marathon eventually becomes. Whether you're training for your first marathon, chasing a personal best, considering the run/walk method, or wondering what's possible as a masters runner, I hope this race-day journey gives you confidence to chase your own goals. If you've enjoyed following this series, thank you for coming along for the ride. Your support throughout these 16 weeks has meant a great deal, and I can't wait to share how race day unfolded. 🏃 Subscribe for more running adventures, marathon training, race reviews and the next challenge. Gold Coast Marathon 2026 | I'm ready to run/walk a sub 3.50 | Ep.15
#GoldCoastMarathon #MarathonTraining #RunWalkRun #BostonQualifier #MastersRunner #RunningOver60 #MarathonJourney #RoadToBoston #GoldCoast #MarathonRunner 0:00 Intro xxx IN THIS VIDE0 16 weeks of marathon training comes down to this. After months of early mornings, long runs, speed sessions, setbacks, travel, self-doubt and even a heavy fall just weeks ago, race day for the Gold Coast Marathon has finally arrived. In this episode I take you through the final week of taper as I prepare to attempt a sub 3:50 marathon using the run/walk method. The goal? To prove that even at almost 60 years of age, a smart and consistent approach can still produce strong marathon performances. This week includes a visit to the Gold Coast Marathon Expo, final race preparations, and a shakeout run at Varsity Lakes parkrun. That 5km run turned out to be the perfect confidence booster. The legs felt fresh, the pace felt comfortable, and for the first time I genuinely felt that my marathon goal was within reach. A sub 3:50 finish would not only be a personal achievement, but would also secure a Boston Marathon qualifying time for a 60-year-old runner. The training is done. The fitness is built. The plan is in place. Now all that's left is race day. Can the run/walk method deliver a sub 3:50 marathon? Episode 16 will reveal all. 🏃 Gold Coast Marathon 2026 🏃 Marathon Training Over 60 🏃 Run Walk Method Marathon Training 🏃 Road To Boston Qualifier If you enjoy following real-world marathon training, run/walk racing, masters running and marathon preparation, please consider subscribing and following the journey. #MarathonTraining #GoldCoastMarathon #RunWalkRun #RunningOver60 #MastersRunning #MarathonTaper #RoadToGoldCoast #runningmotivation 0:00 Intro 4:11 The Final Big Week 17:02 And The Taper Begins 22:01 Where Am I At IN THIS VIDEO With just one week remaining until the Gold Coast Marathon, this should have been a time to relax, recover and trust the training. Instead, life had other plans. After the fall during my long run in Episode 13, the good news is that the body has bounced back remarkably well. The cuts and bruises have healed, my running paces are back to where they were before the accident, and confidence in my fitness is returning. But this hasn't been a normal taper. Away from running, we've been working hard to prepare our house for sale, meaning plenty of physical work, long days and not exactly the restful lead-in most marathon plans recommend. In this episode of Still Chasing Marathons at 60, I navigate the first two weeks of tapering, balance marathon preparation with real-life commitments, and try to trust the fitness built over months of consistent training. 🏃 Gold Coast Marathon 2025 🏃 Marathon training at age 60 🏃 Run/Walk Method 🏃 Recovery from a training fall 🏃 Marathon tapering strategies 🏃 Balancing life and marathon training 🏃 Chasing a sub-3:50 marathon The body feels good again. The running feels good again. But with race day fast approaching, the mental battle is only just beginning. Can I trust the work I've done? The Long Run I Needed After Japan | My Fastest 5k In 2 Years | Ep.10
0:00 Intro 0:50 Help Me 1:15 The Long Run 12:24 What I Mised In Japan IN THIS VIDEO Has Japan given me a fitness boost… or am I still missing the long-run strength needed for a marathon? In Episode 10 of The Run/Walk Marathon Project, I'm back home after two weeks in Japan and looking to build on the progress made during my travels. The speed is improving, endurance feels stronger, and I even record my fastest parkrun in two years. But marathon training isn't about a fast 5km. It's about being able to keep moving when the legs get tired and the clock keeps ticking. After four weeks without a proper long run, this week was all about getting time on the legs, rebuilding endurance, and laying the foundation for the next phase of the Gold Coast Marathon build. I also take my new ASICS Superblast shoes out for some serious kilometres. After hearing so much about them, I was keen to find out if they lived up to the hype—and after this week's running, I can see why so many runners rate them so highly. The goal remains the same: a sub-3:50 marathon at the Gold Coast using the run/walk method. The question is: am I finally developing the long-run legs I'll need to get there? Join me for another week of training, recovery, lessons learned, and one important long run as the marathon countdown continues. #RunWalkMarathonProject #GoldCoastMarathon #MarathonTraining #RunWalkMethod #RunningAt60 #ASICSSuperblast #MastersRunning AFFILIATE LINKS Hydragun https://hey.hydragun.com/runwithwoody Disclosure: The above is a paid affiliate link to the Hydragun Massage Gun. A Twist On The Run Walk Method | The training plan | Ep.02
#runwalkmethod #running #runwithwoody 0:00 Intro 1:06 The week begins 6:55 Fastest 5k of 2026 8:14 The long run IN THIS VIDEO Still chasing marathons at 60… but this time, I’m doing things very differently. In this episode of The Run/Walk Marathon Project, I break down the exact training plan I’m using to prepare for the Gold Coast Marathon — and why I’ve switched to a run/walk strategy. After dealing with a chronic knee issue and time off running, I can’t rely on high mileage anymore. So the big question is… can this approach actually get me back to the start line? This is Week 2 of a 16-week marathon build. It’s not perfect, and there are plenty of doubts already — but the journey has begun. If you’ve ever wondered whether run/walk can work… especially as you get older or come back from injury… this series is for you.
